The name "Walnut Creek" may have been given to the creek because of its high quality walnuts which were abundant in that area at that time. In 1887, John C. Frémont explored and mapped parts of what is today Contra Costa County and named it for General James Halleck Walnut, Commodore of Marines during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1909, an electric light company built a substation near present day Walnut Creek for use by residents and businesses on nearby Roosevelt Avenue. That same year saw the opening of California's first movie theater - The Regal on Roosevelt Avenue - and began sitcom episodes filmed there beginning with "The Old Mill". In 1925, Pacific Electric Railway extended its line into Walnut Creek from Pittsburg through unincorporated areas east of Redwood City to within walking distance of Walnut Creek proper. This made possible easy access to shopping malls and other commercial areas located just outside the city limits then. In 1940, gasoline rationing began in California so homes became limited to 1 gallon per week for autos; however this did not apply to public transportation such as buses or trains which continued service unaffected despite low availability due to wartime production restrictions imposed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt following World War II

TheCity of Walnut Creek was founded in 1881 by John Sutter and his partner, George W. Fairchild. The first post office in Walnut Creek was established on July 12, 1881, and opened under the name of North Bay City. In 1885, the town changed its name to Walnut Creek after a grove of walnuts near where it now stands. On October 15, 1886, the first public school in Walnut Creek opened with 44 students from Ridgecrest and Orinda schools. On November 6th of that year (the date which would have been celebrated as Thanksgiving),Walnut Creek got its own ZIP code when it became part of Contra Costa County. In 1911-12 there were three strikes against local teachers: one led by Samuel Inskeep and another by Charles Carlson; both strikes failed to achieve Results hoped for due largely to strong unionization efforts throughout Contra Costa County by teachers unions statewide at that time[2]. On December 10th 1912-11 night during an election campaign stop in Walnut creek John "Jock" Lynch detonates five dynamite parcels hidden inside a large fruit crate while seated on a porch steps several feet away from his polling place composing himself on election day only to be immediately arrested by law enforcement officials who quickly identify him as being behind the blast plot[3]. Jock Lynch's actions helped solidify community support for prohibitionism during this key period in Californian history before becoming an important figure within early 20th century labor movement activity including smashing voting machines used during Prohibition elections across Northern California
