Walnut Creek is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 47,154 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Contra Costa County. Walnut Creek was founded in 1868 as a small town on the north bank of the Alameda River by lumbermen and farmers. The city's current location was chosen in 1935 when it became part of the new San Francisco metropolitan area. Walnut Creek is a census-designated place in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 15,711 at the 2010 census. Walnut Creek is located on the eastern edge of Richmond Heights and is bordered by the cities of Antioch and Pleasanton to the northeast, San Ramon to the southeast, and Hercules to the southwest. It stands along Interstate 680 between Antioch and Pleasanton. The name Walnut Creek comes from two pioneer families who settled there in 1859: Richards family from Virginia and Weems family from North Carolina. In 1866, John W. Walnut became one of incorporators for Contra Costa County when its creation was ratified by voters in an election held after California gained statehood. He was also one of three pioneers who founded Walnut Creek High School (now known as Contra Costa College) in 1870. The first post office at Walnut Creek opened on December 12, 1868, under the name "Richardsville". The name was changed to "Walnut creek" on January 1st of 1870 due to objections from local farmers who saw it as an advertising campaign slogan by Richard Wurtzel & Sons hardware store owners nearby that month's issue of "The Californian". On November 3rd 1870, a schoolhouse stand at what is now corner Main Street/I-680 and Winchester Avenue served students attending local academies until 1903 when state law prohibited public schools from building near county lines (thus ending this type of educational service). In 1902–3 a small coal mine operated outcroppings covering about were discovered north east of town off I-680; this became known as "the Menlo Pit" because coal mining operations here ceased shortly thereafter (see Minerals Management Act 1934 § 9(a)). By 1935 over had been mined including shafts down into what are now underground workings; however surface workings continued through 1949 when they were closed with all production stopped except for occasional maintenance purposes which continue today (see Mineral Rights Group 1984). Coal dust deposited over many years clogging up water supplies caused extensive damage during earlier years associated with open pit mining; during most recent gold rush days 1955 thru 1959 some crews worked ' synaptic' or hand sold prospecting licences deep into old workings using lithograph printing machines then selling panning rights back home in 1965 by mail dropped off among prospectors (' mail drops') something which continues today whereby large quantities high quality gold are being recovered without any current level ofdamage!

Today,walnuts are still produced near where they were first grown – just east of Menlo Park – but their importance has diminished markedly since then given other crops such as almonds (which are more popular) have surpassed walnuts as California's leading agricultural product.
