Walnut Creek is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 11,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Valley metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Walnut Creek were Native Americans. One of these was Chief Seaweed and his band of Coast Miwok Indians who lived on the banks of the creek from about 1814 to 1847. They built their village on a bluff overlooking the creek and hunted game near it. When gold was found in California in 1850, some of these Indians started mining for gold near present-day Walnut Creek and other areas within Contra Costa County. Others relocated to various parts of California until they finally arrived in Walnut Creek where they set up permanent homes around 1857. In 1862, American Civil War General Don Carlos Manuel Pico moved his headquarters from Stockton to Hercules after being ordered by President Abraham Lincoln to protect Californians trying to cross over into Texas via Mexico City because that section of Mexico had become a hotbed of insurgent activity following Mexican independence from Spain. A detachment under Pico's command marched through Walnut Creek on its way northward when they stopped at an old Indian settlement east of townsite (present day San Pablo Avenue). There they met with Chief Seaweed and other chiefs who told them about rich underground resources nearby that could be exploitation if permission was obtained from their government leaders back home for such an undertaking. He built a cabin on the banks of the creek and became known as "the founder of Walnut Creek." Lewis's cabin still stands today and is a popular tourist attraction for its historical significance. Other early settlers included David Dudley, who arrived in 1828; James Fenton, who came to Walnut Creek in 1830; Nathaniel Waddell, who arrived in 1833; and Ebenezer Morse, who arrived in 1835. In 1840, John Sayers moved to Walnut Creek from Stockton and started growing walnuts. By 1850, he had developed what would becomeWalnut Creek into an important agricultural center with 24 businesses ranging from farmers to milliners. In 1865, Jepson Paper Company was established here which remains one of the town's main employers to this day. The company manufactured paper products such as envelopes and ballots until it merged with Dow Chemical Corporation in 1985. During World War II, many American soldiers were stationed at Walnut Creek Air Force Base where they processed food for troops overseas. After the war ended, many local businesses closed down due to lack of customers or competition from adjacent towns that had larger populations. However, some notable establishments that remain active today include Tomlinson's Chinese restaurant (which opened its doors on October 1st 1945), Purdy's Bakery (founded by Mrs.-Ralph Purdy on December 5th 1950),and WBIS-FM Radio Station 95% FM (founded on November 15th 1960).
