In 1907, walnuts were so scarce that the city council decided to rename all of its streets after American nuts instead of their original namesakes (e.g., Oak Street for walnuts and avenues for oak trees). The last mayor before incorporation was Harry Weese; he resigned effective June 30, 1909, due to health reasons. In 1967, walnuts were removed from our diet entirely because of their link with obesity and heart disease.
