Walnut Creek, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The town was founded in 1876 by John Sutter and his brother, George Sutter. Today Walnut Creek is a small but vibrant community with a rich history. The first people to reside in what is now Walnut Creek were the Ohlone Indians. They arrived in the area around 1775 and hunted and gathered food near the present day intersection of Camino Real and El Camino Real. In 1837, Jepson Cranch was formed from land that once comprised part of what is now Walnut Creek. It grew rapidly due to its location on the Via Rail line between San Francisco and Sacramento. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Jepson Cranch. In 1876, John Sutter established himself as a ranchman in central California after purchasing 1,500 acres of land east of today’s Walnut Creek from Manuel Nieto for $6 per acre ($22 per square foot). He named his new ranch “Walnut Creek” after his family’s old home near Edinburgh, Scotland (now Wishaw). To support himself and his expanding ranch, John started to grow walnuts which he Logressed at his farm near Bakersfield into barrels or sacks then shipped downriver to marketplaces throughout Northern California. By 1886,walnuts had become an important local commodity and John had constructed a large processing plant on the banks of Clearwater River where he manufactured nuts until 1926 when he sold all operations to Nestle AG for $145 million dollars (approximately $4 billion today). John Sutter may have been one of the first Americans to recognize that walnuts could be used as both an agricultural feedstock for livestock and as a source of income for themselves and their families. He also realized that walnuts could be processed into different products such as nutshells (shells made from flattenedwalnuts), chocolates/drucks (chocolate interiors inside hard chocolate bars), pellets (a type of lead based ammunition) and even cigarettes/ cigars/ rolling papers
