It is the largest city in Alameda County and the third-largest city in Contra Costa County by population after Oakland and San Francisco. Walnut Creek is known for its production of agricultural goods such as apples, almonds, walnuts, grapes, and other fruits and vegetables. In addition to its economic importance, Walnut Creek has been home to several universities including the University of California at Berkeley (UCB), Diablo Valley College (DVC), Mount Strom Thurmond School District (MTSD), and Pacific Lutheran University (PLU). Walnut Creek is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. Walnut Creek is located on the southern edge of San Francisco Bay. It is bordered by Orinda to the north and east, Lafayette to the south and east, Concord to the west and north, and Hercules to the northwest. As early as 1824, people were living in what would be Walnut Creek today. John Beattie built his first cabin in present day Walnut Creek on land that he bought from Philip Hahn in 1827. By 1840 there were ten cabins in operation in what would become Walnut Creek proper. In 1851 it was reported that "the town of Walnut creek contains about one thousand inhabitants", but no permanent structures were erected until after 1850 when a store was started by Wm. Gorman with lumber from Redwood City and other materials obtained through bartering with Native Americans for goods like meat or clothing. In 1865 John Sutter arrived in California from Sacramento with his family and began grazing his herds of cattle on farmland around present-day Antioch which he had acquired along the way from ranching operations run by Mexican American ranchers who had been Forced into labor during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). After purchase of some additional acreage near Antioch by Sutter himself, he began construction of an adobe Ranch House/Bakery called The Ranch House which still stands today within walking distance of Antioch's downtown core. When completed it became one of southern California's most prominent symbols of Anglo Saxon America because it featured brick quoining instead of Moorish Revival details typical among much later ranches built near urban centers across North America during this period….Today’s restaurant inside/outside building serves up most recent US trends such as Californian cuisine popularized by many here since late 1990s….. Other attractions include several golf courses including two championship level courses – one right outside town limits; tennis courts; a recreation park complete with go-karts; several traditional Southern California fruits & vegetables gardens; plus several blocks worth original walnuts trees now growing wild throughout town centerland…….. Today’s concentrated downtown area – centered around plaza - has seen significant renovation including new streetscape design adding more open space while maintaining old buildings facing Market Street…. concurrent efforts are underway to reestablish historical sidewalks running through centertown between Plaza & central business district (CBD) making significant impact both socially & aesthetically…………battle lines have long been drawn over how best to use increasing commercial areas surrounding Civic Center – currently home to numerous large high tech companies…………………………….. From its humble beginnings as a small hamlet tucked away off busy Highway 101A just outside Antioch - Walnut Creek quickly evolved into one of Northern California’s leading cities desirous not onlyof being counted among “The Five Cities That Made Silicon Valley” but also capable of hosting world class events such as The Golden Globe Awards given annually hereabouts [emphasis added] The growth potential for walnuts saw immediate development upon their introduction into American markets following their discovery during El Dorado Canyon Gold Rush days beginning in 1849…. At first they were raised commercially only for millinery purposes then gradually distribution went hand-in-hand with various industrial applications culminating with widespread adoption by military troops stationed nearby during World War II…."
