Walnut Creek is a city located in Contra Costa County, California, United States. It was founded in 1868 by entrepreneur Jonathan E. Atwood and his wife Mary Jane Atwood. The city has been named according to the site of its first post office - Hardin's Gap - until 1937. In the early 21st century, Walnut Creek became one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Northern California due to its large immigrant population from Asia and Latin America. As a result of this diversity, Walnut Creek has experienced various radical changes over the years, including several waves of immigration that have led to tension between some residents and police officers.

They named their village "Walnut" after one of their own tribe's sacred trees. In 1849, walnuts began being shipped to markets in Northern California for export because they could not be grown locally. By 1872, walnuts had become an important export crop for Contra Costa County and a number of other counties in Southern California. In 1892, George Washington Carver founded Carver Agricultural Company which became one of Contra Costa County's leading agricultural businesses. He raised corn, cotton and other crops on his land around Walnut Creek until he sold it in 1938 to John Rolfe who developed it into a major high-technology center including two universities – UC Berkeley and Stanford – as well as numerous factories producing electronic products such as calculators, radios andjewelry watches. The area now known as Carver Heights was developed nearby by Rolfe's son Gordon Rolfe Jr., also a scientist and entrepreneur whose company developed pesticides used today on farms throughout North America

The first people to live in what is now Walnut Creek were the Ohlone. The Ohlone were a Native American tribe that lived near present day Berkeley and other towns in central California. They hunted and gathered food from around the valley. In 1842, Russian fur trader Ivan Fyodorovich Tolstoy arrived in Walnut Creek with his family and began trading with the local Indian tribes. He found land for his farm on what is now Tolstoy Lane. Between 1842-1849, about twenty families settled here including David Hagerman, who built a home on present day Hagerman Drive. By 1860, there were over fifty families living here. One of the earliest businesses here was Mr. Cray’s grocery store which opened in 1861 on Third Street between Harrison and Montgomery Streets across from Berkeley High School today known as Hagerman Plaza Today's Walnut Creek shopping center was built on this site specifically to house Mr. Cray's store when it opened in 1961
