In 1867, Captain John Cavenagh chartered Rancho Santiago de las Pulgas (later Rancho Seco) within what is now Walnut Creek with 1800 acres (710 hectares). The hacienda operated as a small business until it was sold to Vidal Sassoon in 1914 for $5 million ($ when measured against current values). In 1922, during World War I, American inventor Conrad Preis designed an airplane which he flew over San Francisco Bay called Paxon II or "Preis's Wing". This plane had two identical rotors attached to a single fuselage like a helicopter rotor system and could fly at high speeds without needing fuel or air pressure. He flew it over San Francisco on October 15th 1922 and published his findings in an article entitled "A Plane Made Out of Components - Paxon II" which appeared in "The Aviationist". This event helped popularize aviation technology for everyone including pre-war America which would later become known as Silicon Valley. On November 5th 1912, Walter Paine founded Westinghouse Electric Corporation with three friends: George Westinghouse Jr., William Halsey and Edward Jephcott Potter Sr.. They began manufacturing electric generators starting with a 12 horsepower generator made from two pieces of wood joined by iron hoops that powered an illumination device used by troops during World War I called an arc light projector. Within five years they had produced 100 generators per day! Their initial product was called Philco but they changed it to Westinghouse after one of their employees died because he couldn't get proper insurance! In 1935 they merged with Edison Electric Company creating one of history's largest electrical companies!
