Walnut Creek is located in Contra Costa County, California. It was named after the walnut trees that grow there. The first European to visit Walnut Creek was Giovanni da Vergata in 1649. The creek was also used as a water supply for Mission San Francisco de Asís and other missions in the area. The town of Walnut Creek began to form around 1853 when grazers started to settle near the creek. By 1865, the town had a population of 100 people. In 1871, Walnut Creek became an incorporated city with a population of 912 people. In 1902, it merged with nearby Richmond to form the City of Richmond-Walnut Creek Combined Statistical Area (CSA). On November 15, 1911, a severe fire destroyed much of downtown Richmond-Walnut Creek CSA including most of the churches and other buildings on First Street between Main and Scott Streets. The loss was so great that many businesses closed within weeks and many residents left their homes for years before returning during World War II. The post office at 2223 First Street reopened on November 16, 1911 after being closed for several weeks due to damage caused by the fire. On December 3rd 1908 an Act providing funds for school construction in Contra Costa County was approved by the state legislature and signed into law by Governor William Hahn on December 5th 1908. This act designated part of what is now Walnut Creek as Columbian Heights School District No 1 which included land east of Scott Street between First and Second Streets as well as part west of First Street between Main and Third Streets which were then considered part of Walnut Ridge School District No 2 In 1915 local artist Harry Smith painted "Noah's Ark" near where Park Boulevard meets Interstate 80 just east of I-80 exit 12A in what is now known as Westwood Village . This painting has been preserved and can be seen at his home at 6151 Euclid Avenue across from Luther Burbank High School .
