Walnut Creek is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Walnut Creek–Folsom area of the South Bay Area of San Francisco. The first Europeans to visit Walnut Creek were Spanish conquistadores in 1565 and they named it "Guadalupe" after St. Joseph's Chapel which they found near the creek's mouth. In 1846, walnut trees were introduced to California by John Sutter who had come from Northern California looking for land for his new settlement, Sacramento. He brought some nuts with him as he explored the state. In 1849, J. D. Richardson erected an adobe house in what is now downtown Walnut Creek and offered it for sale to anyone who could provide $100 per acre (4 cents per foot). Richardson made a payment on October 3, 1851 and received title to the property on November 17 of that year In 1857, Atherton Waddell opened a store at Fourth and Market Streets which became known as The Waddells Store because its owner, Atherton Waddell Sr., had several children who worked there until he died in 1915. On December 12th of that year, Charles Fenton rented land between Second and Third Streets from Atherton Waddell Jr., making Fenton Street walnut alley because walnuts grew abundantly along this street near his store). In 1870-71 George Washington Hodges built a cabin on Elk Grove Road north of present day Northgate Drive just east of Interstate 80/Walnut Creek Boulevard — this was one of Hodges' many stores along these streets which would become familiar names such as Girdler's Grocery (now Macy's), Applewhite Drugstore (.now KMart), etc.. By 1890 most residents had moved out or been replaced by people from other parts of California; however, there remained about sixty families living in Walnut Creek until World War II when all but two homes were destroyed by fire or bombing raids during World War II . One reason why walnuts continued to be important for commerce reasons even after their introduction into California was that wild varieties still existed at different locales throughout the state; moreover, tree nurseries continued to propagatewalnuts long after commercial production stopped taking place due to environmental concerns about crossbreds becoming uncontrollable hybrids . Finally , early 20th century development led to increased traffic through downtown Walnut Creek so businesses began opening up outside the central business district anchored by The Waddells Store before 1940 when Route 101 replaced Downtown Walnut Creek as center stage shopping artery '. The first settlers in what is now Walnut Creek were men from eastern England who arrived on boats in 1799 and named their new settlement for a walnut tree that grew near their property. They built a small cabin and started to trade with the nearby towns of Stockton and Concord. In 1849, they founded what is now an incorporated city with a landowning class and became one of the wealthiest communities in California. In 1856, George Washington Goodwin opened up what is now known as Goodwin's Store on Second Street in Walnut Creek after purchasing land from John Sutter. By 1860, Goodwin had developed into one of the most prosperous merchants in Contra Costa County by importing goods such as flour, tobacco and tools from Illinois, Boston and Philadelphia. He also operated stores in Pleasanton and Dublin before his death at age 83 years old in 1865. His son Julius followed him into business but died young at age 44 years old during World War I leaving his father's widow Helene sole proprietor of Goodwin's Store until her death seven years later at age 89 years old due to health problems caused by arthritis). Some historians believe that Henry Kissinger met Nixon when he was living briefly with his family near Walnut Creek in 1951-52; however this cannot be confirmed without further evidence Walnut Creek has experienced many different types of growth over its history including residential (the development of subdivisions such as Lakeside Drive), commercial (the growth of local businesses such as Goldsboro Liquors) and industrial (the arrival of Kaiser Aluminum Company which produced aluminum cans for General Motors). Today it continues to grow through professional services such as law enforcement (including being home to two county-owned sheriff's substations)and data processing operations like Google Earth which are headquartered within its city limits
