The Santa Clara Valley is to the north and east. Walnut Creek was named for its abundance of walnuts, which were first grown there in 1847. The city began as a small farming community on what is now Maple Avenue and Mission Street. In 1868, when California became a state, walnut growers in other states sent their children to study at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut so they could learn about American capitalism and how to produce crops that could be exported back home. One of these students was John Witherspoon Walnut who arrived in Walnut Creek with his family in 1868. He purchased some land and started to build a house which still stands today on Second Street near Center Boulevard - it is now known as Witherspoon House Museum (www.witherspoonhousemuseum.org). Mr. Walnut also started a small grocery store next door which continued until 1951 when it merged with J C Penney's chain (www-aolsearch@microsoftxpcom). In 1916, after World War I ended with Germany’s surrender, thousands of veterans returned home from Europe and found jobs throughout California but few had any money left over for food or housing – especially because most farmers had quit growing crops during the war years due to lack of competition from European farmers who had brought new technologies to bear on agriculture . So many soldiers came home that local merchants decided to name their town after them: West Point (1916), Fort Point (1920), Camp Sherman (1921), etcetera . At first people called it "theValleyValley". When America entered World War II we all knew that we were going into another conflict like no other; our country needed products that would help us win this war! And so did contracts for building materials etcetera... Upon ending hostilities at the end of 1945 many people decided to come back home & start fresh again- forget all about what happened during WWII! So within 6 months or so of America's victory over Japan everyone living outside Oakland & Berkeley had moved back IN! All those young vets from CA who never went anywhere else decided they'd better move too since pretty much everything back then was just legal gambling anyways :-) 4 years later when General Douglas MacArthur relieved Emperor Hirohito of his rule in Japan he ordered ALL Japanese citizens living east of Sacramento be deported because he felt Tokyo was no longer an acceptable capital city! This included many people from Walnut creek including John Witherspoon Walnuts son Harry who lived there then too! After hearing about this decision his father built him a business office near 5th & Market Streets- this office still stands today (& has been used by several different businesses over the years) as headquarters for Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) Regional Headquarters Area - one stoplight away from downtown Oakland ! With all these changes going on around him John WitherspoonWalnuts just kept doing what he always does best--businessman trying To make life easier for everybody ! Over time various restaurants like Dutch Bros., Java Joe's BBQ Shack & others opened up along with several schools including East Side High School which closed down but reopened as Regency Academy early last decade (!)) Today Walnut Creek offers residents plenty of activities such as golfing/schedule sports events at Six Flags Great America park or simply taking walks through its wide variety of cultural attractions like historical homesites perched atop hills overlooking downtown or heading out onto BART trains headed south past Lake Merritt towards Fremont or north towards Livermore; shopping opportunities at numerous high end stores like Saks Fifth Avenue or Neiman Marcus; dining experiences at top restaurants including Nobu sushi restaurant or Benares Indian Restaurant; artsandcrafts boutiques located throughout downtown offering unique items not available elsewhere; water sports such asSUPSailing lessons hereabouts ; wine tasting tours led by experienced experts at several well-known wineries throughout town; endless possibilities for nightlife sightings concluding with an evening show by locally famous DJs at oneOf Bay Area's leading nightclubs
