Walnut Creek was founded on November 30, 1849 by John Sutter and his brother-in-law George Hinkle. It became an incorporated community on February 15, 1902. The name of Walnut Creek is derived from the native redwood tree that grows there. The first settlers in Walnut Creek were men who had come to trade with the bearskins found near Fort Point on San Francisco Bay. In 1849 they set up a log cabin near what is now its center and named it "Napa Valley". They soon realized that they could not grow walnuts here because of the temperature extremes and so decided to move their business offshore to Orinda where they grew acorns for export. In 1862 John Sutter came across some walnuts growing wild east of Redding and decided to try them out. He built a millinery shop in 1870 in what is now downtown Walnut Creek and started exporting walnuts to other towns in California including Concord, Sacramento and Stockton. By 1880 he had become one of the leadingwalnut growers in Northern California In 1902 when Contra Costa County was established, Walnut Creek became part of it as well as Orinda which then lost its status as an independent municipality but kept its name until 1947 when it merged into Walnut Creek proper Orinda's growth as a commercial center during this time led to the development of several small shopping malls around town including One Stop Plaza (opened 1987) which anchored the old Jordan Shopping Center; Westfield Great Mall (opened 1992); Sam's Club (1992), anchor Strip mall; Walmart Supercenters (1996) opened adjacent to Sam's Club; JCPenney(1997) anchoring another strip mall; Target (1999) anchoring another strip mall; Macy's(2000). These developments spawned new subdivisions such as Northpark Village (opened 2000), Southpark Village (2002), Willowbrook Village(2004), Castle Park(2006). There are more than fifty schools within walking distance of downtown Walnut Creek offering educational opportunities from kindergarten through college level On December 5th 2006 it was announced that Interstate 80 would be widened from 4 lanes down to 2 lanes concurrent with I-880 between Richmond/Newport News Airport and San Ramon/ Diablo Valley International Airport creating an express lane running through downtown Walnut creek which will alleviate traffic congestion on I-880 . This project is expected over $1 Billion dollars , making DowntownWalnutCreekthe most expensive URBAN GARDEN city ever created

Walnut Creek is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. Walnut Creek is located on the eastern edge of the Central Valley. It is bordered by Half Moon Bay to the north and east, Menlo Park to the south and west, and Orinda to the northwest. The first people to live in what is now Walnut Creek were Native Americans who hunted deer and other animals along the used watercourse that runs through it today. In 1859, Ezra Stiles established a trading post here with his brother-in-law William Richardson. By 1870, walnuts had become an important export crop in Contra Costa County because they were not grown elsewhere in California. A mill was built here in 1872 by American entrepreneur George Hearn for grinding walnuts into flour for local merchants. The establishment of a railroad line through this area helped spur development of Walnut Creek as a commercial center; by 1875, mills had produced over one million pounds of flour from walnuts alone! The early 20th century saw significant growth in Wall Street speculation and investment here; some businesses emerged such as Jansen's Glass Cleaners which became one of America's largest convenience stores (now Walmart) and Pacific Gas & Electric which constructed an approximately $200 million transmission line through Contra Costa County that linked San Francisco with Los Angeles. This engineering marvel increased gas prices throughout Northern California but also created thousands of new jobs across both cities during what has come to be known as "the Golden Age" of transportation Development in California! During World War II there was substantial military production activity located near Walnut Creek including ammunition production at nearby Livermore National Laboratory; defense installations included Camp Pendleton onshore within easy reach of Walnut Creek as well as extensive housing developments around Menlo Park and Orinda. After 1945 various retail establishments began opening up throughout downtown areas surrounding Main Street while often incorporating landmark architecture from earlier eras like Jansen's Glass Cleaners into their design - many still exist today! A major redevelopment project occurred between 1990-1996 called "Civic Stream" which aimed to revitalize much of downtown Walnut Creek with new shopping malls (including Target), office towers, residential neighborhoods (such as Eagle Rock), hotel/condominiums, public works facilities (including a large reservoirs/water park), etc.; ultimately resulting in 2 million square feet (210 acres) being redeveloped or added to existing structures! Today Walnut Creek retains its historic downtown core complete with its associated architecture while also becoming increasingly popular for its modern amenities such as parks & schools within walking distance!.
