Walnut Creek, California is a small city located in Contra Costa County, California. It is the birthplace of modern firearms and ammunition manufacturing. The town was founded in 1853 by John Winchester and his brother Samuel Winchester. The first gun factory in Walnut Creek was built by George Browning in 1875. Walnut Creek became an independent city on July 1, 1904. Gun mags were invented and manufactured here in Walnut Creek starting with the creation of the first magazine pistol in 1886 by Olin Stephens. In 1952, The National Firearms Museum opened its doors to the public in Walnut Creek and continues to exhibit firearms from throughout American history onsite as well as historical exhibits about firearm production here at the museum.

The creek and its tributaries are a major source of water for the city of San Francisco. The first recorded visit to what is now Walnut Creek was by Father Junipero Serra in 1776, during his missionary journey through this area. In 1821, John Cranch mapped it as part of Rancho Tejon. In 1882, Atherton sold portion of Rancho Tejon to George Eastman and moved his family to Walnut Creek from elsewhere in Contra Costa County. In 1892, Walnut Creek became one of six townships in Contra Costa County when it was created from parts of Rancho Janes and Rancho Tenaya. It remained an unincorporated community until 1916 when it incorporated as a town under the name "Walnut Creek." Streets were laid out much as they are today - with only two exceptions: Westshore Drive (now State Route 8), which runs parallel to Tomales Bayou; and Salinas Street (later State Route 24), which runs along the bay's eastern edge between Menlo Park and Pleasanton towards Fremont. The townsite grew rapidly due to its location near Highway 101 (then called Sunrise Highway) - which made it easy for people commuting into San Francisco or other nearby cities to reach walnuts that were being grown around Tomales Bayou near where the townsite now stands

It is the county seat of Contra Costa County and the largest city in its county. The name "Walnut Creek" is derived from the word "walnut," which means an almond tree. Walnut Creek began as a small ranch near what is now downtown Walnut Creek. In 1881, George Winton registered a land grant to Lucius Templeton of Walnut Creek for 400 acres (1 km2). Templeton built his first home there in 1882 and named it Walnut Grove after his walnut trees that he had purchased from John Whitehead. In 1886, five brothers founded the Central Pacific Railroad at Needles on Hwy 101 north of Walnuts Creek with $10,000 raised by subscription from lumber merchants along the route. They named their railroad company Central Pacific Railroad Company because they were working towards completing a transcontinental railway across North America by way of South America and Asia. The company's first train pulled into Needles on February 20, 1887. The town of Walnuts creek was platted in 1903 when Charles Pogue laid out streets east of where his mill used to be located and north of present-day Foothill Boulevard. When Pogue died in 1904 without children to take over his business, four trustees took control of Pogue's estate - James Pogue (brother 2nd), Charles Gorman (brother 3rd), Edward Post (uncle) -and subdivided it into blocks until 1916 when all blocks were combined into one block again for convenience sake only! Streets leading away from Walnuts creek were Elmira Avenue & Hwy 101; Russel Street & Hwy 99W; Maple Avenue & Antioch Road; Fitzroy Street & Gilman Road; etcetera... so people could get lost going down Elmira Ave., but today you can find almost all street addresses within 1 mile radius of downtown if you look hard enough! It wasn't until 1920 that Phoneix Corporation provided telephone service to nearby towns including Walnuts creek - phone numbers started coming off wires right around then! By 1925 Callerix had completed construction on Bay Bridge Rd which crossed under Elmerosa Ave just south of downtown making it possible for people living east or west OF Downtown to have Telephone service too! In 1927 we finally moved our Maintenance Dept location FROM THE TIMEPLEX BUILDING TO OUR PRESENT LOCATION ON CASCADE ROAD! Finally we had someplace to put our power room AND MAINTENANCE OFFICE!!! And THAT was how MODERN DAY WALNUT CREEK COMMUNITY STARTED!!! Thanks Callerix for ALL your help back then!!!!!
