It is east of Hercules and west of Folsom. The name Walnut Creek comes from the Yokuts word "walin" meaning to split or break up (a log) into small pieces for fuel or cooking. So when Captain John C. Fremont discovered this area in 1821 while exploring what would become California, he named it after his friend Major General James Hurd's home village in England—Walminton Hall—where he had been stationed during the Napoleonic Wars. A post office called Walnut Creek was established in 1827, and remained in operation until 1911. The first settlers arrived here by boat from Northern California starting around 1848; they were farmers who planted walnuts along the riverbanks as a way to generate income and provide food for their families during times of drought. By 1870, walnuts had become an important part of local economy and were being shipped off to markets all over the US and Europe. After years of growth and transformation, Walnut Creek reached its current size with 1,500 residents in 1990 – making it one of Contra Costa County’s fastest-growing communities between 1990 and 2000! Many people who live here now first came here as workers on various agricultural projects that took place throughout our county over those years; including building bridges across San Joaquin River back then! A rich history of walnut trees in Walnut Creek starts with the arrival of humans in the area about 10,000 years ago. The first evidence of walnuts being grown in Walnut Creek comes from a tool found at the site that suggests early human occupation of this area. The first recorded mention of walnuts occurs in 1771 when Governor Mirabeau Lamar mentioned “walnuts” in his journal. However, it wasn’t until 1815 that a tree was reported to have been cut down on the corner of Third and Elm streets. By 1828, walnuts had started to be grown commercially on a small scale near present-day Walnut Creek. In 1849, James Hogg discovered oil shale near present day Walnut Creek and decided to exploit it. He named his discovery Willits after one of his advisors, Sir John Willits who had played an important role in developing colonial British oil reserves. The name stuck and has been used ever since for the oil field located near today’s Walnut Creek. During World War II, walnuts were used as a source of fuel for American bombers and warships. In 1946,Walnut Grove Farms began producing their own brand of nuts,Walnut Grove Farms peanuts. Today they are one of America’s leading producers and distributors of nuts products including peanut butter, jellybeans, crackers and so forth
