Walnut Creek is a small town in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 5,525 at the 2010 census. Walnut Creek is located on the eastern shore of Lake Merritt and adjacent to the Contra Costa National Forest. It is part of the Hayward–Oakland–Fremont metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Walnut Creek were Native Americans who hunted and gathered acorns from the oak trees that grow there. In 1847, walnut farmers founded a settlement on Alameda Island in San Francisco Bay as part of an effort to find a new home for themselves after their original ranch lands were confiscated by Mexico during the Mexican-American War. They named their new community afterwalnuts they found growing on their farmsteads nearpresent day Hayward and Oakland. From its beginnings, Walnut Creek has been an agricultural center with crops such as apples, grapes, nuts, almonds, olives and cotton; it also became known for its independent spirit and strong sense of community. In 1909 Walnut creek voters passed a resolution recognizing Berkeley as the unofficial home of California because it had been where California's first state legislature was meeting when it met in Monterey County east of San Jose (and not in Sacramento). After years of debate over whether Berkeley should be officially designated as "the capital" or "the birthplace"of Californiality (the answer finally going to Berkeley), on February 14th, 1913 city fathers restored jurisdiction back to Sacramento over objections from Mayor George Westinghouse (a Democrat) who wanted his City Hall in downtown Sacramento instead because he thought that would make Cal State more politically active! On October 21st 1915 voters passed Proposition 8 which Prohibitionists hoped would help them win control of local government at a time when alcohol prohibition was being enforced statewide by state law rather than through individual municipalities like Walnut Creek. As Alcoholics Anonymous USA began operations in 1933 walnuts started being replaced by other fruits and vegetables due to high demand for these items during prohibition days – although some apples still remain popular today among AA members! In 1951 walnuts again became popular due to world food shortages caused by communist Mao Zedong's Chinese Civil War policies towards agriculture; this led both local businesses and residents alike to start producing nut butters made from blanched almonds instead of ground nuts which continued until 1972 when all nut butters were phased out because ground nuts are more healthy than processed foods made with them

Walnut Creek was founded in 1853 by Jedediah Smith and named for walnuts that he found near his farmstead. The first post office in Walnut Creek was established in 1857. In 1870, the town had a population of 590 people and one hotel. In 1889, the Central Pacific Railroad built a line through Walnut Creek and it became part of the Oakland–San Jose Railway system. The railroad closed following the 1906 earthquake and fire that destroyed much of Oakland. At its peak during World War II, Walnut Creek had a population of over 30,000 people. During that time it was an important manufacturing center for munitions production due to its location on two major railroads which connected different parts of California with each other. The current incarnation of Walnut Creek began as an agricultural community in the late 19th century about 12 miles east of present-day Hayward on what is now rural Route 9A between Antioch (now Concord) and Gilroy (now Livermore). A group led by David Starr Jordan purchased around 1 million acres (4 km2) around Walnut Creek from James Fenton in 1908 after purchasing Rancho Santa Clara de las Pulgas from Fenton's brother John Copley Purchased land northward along Interstate 680 to build Tracy Hospital Donnelley & Sons Store opened 1901 When I-680 was constructed southward into Contra Costa County instead of northward as planned there were numerous farms/towns impeded from development because their lands were annexed by other towns or because they bordered I-680 on one side or another . One such example is Oakdale which annexation occurred because Oakdale borders Happy Valley on the north side while Happy Valley borders Hercules on the south side . These towns would either have their boundaries changed or simply not developed because annexed land could have easily been developed if given more attention . Finally , when I-580 was realigned eastward within Contra Costa County after being rerouted across county lines following Highway SYSTEM Zebra construction these town boundaries became effective again as many proprietors had no remaining heirs or property situated too far away to take delivery etc so boundary changes ceased

The first railroad was built through Walnut Creek in 1866, and by 1889, there were over 200 businesses in the town. In 1906,Walnut Creek became a city.
