Walnut Creek is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Francisco Peninsula and it is east of Richmond, west of Walnut Creek proper, and south of Concord. The first Europeans to visit what is now Contra Costa County were Spanish priests who went there in 1769 for supplies while exploring present-day Alameda County. They named a small creek called Palo Alto after Santiago de Compostela, captain general of Portugal's Armada who had landed there on an unsuccessful expedition in 1542. A year later, Father José Altieri found walnuts growing near Vallejo and decided to settle them there because they would not grow elsewhere in California. In 1849, John Sutter arrived in Northern California from his rancho at Mission Bay with his family and began construction on Sutter's Fort at the site where he would build the new city of Sacramento. He named his new settlement after walnuts (santiago) because he felt that Californians would be able to get along well if they shared some common interests such as nuts. In 1851, when Sutter's fort was finished, he published a pamphlet entitled "A Plan forlater Settlementof Stocktonand its Vicinity" which proposed that settlers move into adjacent hills so that their industry could be developed together and become self-reliant. An ordinance was passed by San Francisco on November 3, 1850 allowing residents within 1 mile (1 km) of any public building to collect taxes without having to go through the mayor or councilors. This ordinance became effective January 1st, 1851: all citizens within 1 block (2 km) of any public building were required to pay tax rates beginning with $0 per year/$10 per acre ($3 / ha). This early form of government was based upon notions about production rather than consumption; people were expected to provide goods and services instead of consuming them directly. This system gradually changed as economic development occurred throughout Northern California; taxpayers began producing more goods and services themselvesrather than relying solely upon government provision As businesses grew larger and data collection became more sophisticated during this time period Walnut Creek started developing its own infrastructure including water systems, electric lights and streetlights - all unprecedented for fledgling towns or cities in America at that point! After years of growth potential Walnut Creek experienced its first boom period during World War II when many farmers moved into town looking for increased production opportunities due to wartime shortages

By 1853, walnuts had become one of the major crops grown in the area and walnut processors began operations in 1855. The mills closed during World War II but reopened after the war as a research center for almond growers and nut processors. Today, walnuts are an important part of the local economy with processing and distribution facilities scattered throughout Walnut Creek and its environs.
The first permanent Europeans to visit Walnut Creek were the Spanish in 1769. The area now known as Walnut Creek was part of the Rancho San Antonio Mexican land grant given to Juan José de Escobar in 1821. In 1839, walnuts began to be grown in what is today the creek's town of Walnut Creek. The first store opened on Elm Street in 1840 and by 1850, there were six stores and a post office in town. In 1865,Walnut Creek was incorporated as a city with a population of 25 people. By 1870,walnuts had become an important crop throughout California and production reached 3 million pounds per year by 1890.
