During World War II many people came to work in Boeing plants near Berkeley as defense workers; some chose Walnut Creek because it had good schools for their children. Walnut Creek is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 9,721 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Contra Costa County and is bordered by Walnut Creek Canyon to the east, Pittsburg to the south, Richmond to the west and north and Stockton to the northwest. The first Europeans who encountered walnuts were Spanish traders in 1769; they found them growing wild near what is now Walnut Creek. In 1847, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort in present-day Richmond after his survey of Rancho San Pablo land led him to believe that he could find rich deposits of silver in that area. He named his new settlement after one of his early investors, Edward Cranch Walnut (1808-1875). soon thereafter other pioneers followed suit with small towns developing around these initial settlements including Pittsburg (founded 1849), Concord (established 1850), Randolph (founded 1852) and Gilroy (established 1860). By 1870 there were twenty-six towns in Contra Costa County. In 1865, when gold was discovered nearby at Tomales Bay, settlers began flowing into Walnut Creek from all over California looking for a stake in this newly discovered treasure trove. The city of Walnut Creek was established as a result and quickly grew into one of America's major bedroom communities during its boom years between 1920 and 1940.
