Walnut Creek is a city located in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 41,865 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in the East Bay region of San Francisco and one of its five cities. The name Walnut Creek likely comes from the acorns that were being harvested there before it was developed as a town. The first person to settled in what would become Walnut Creek was James Hutton in 1851. In 1853, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort on Mount Diablo and named his new settlement after Hutton's farm near present-day Pleasanton. In 1861, George Hearn established an agricultural colony near Millbrae and called it Oaklands after Hearn's farm near Dublin, Ohio. In 1865, rancheros Manuel Ramirez and Antonio Canizares acquired land at the confluence of Cloverdale Creek and Walnut Creek for grazing purposes; they named their new community Canisius after St. Augustine Parish in Valencia, Spain where Canizares had been born some years earlier. After several failed attempts to establish a town elsewhere within Contra Costa County due to lack of natural resources or infrastructure (including two failed efforts by judge David Beall), Ramirez and Canizares finally succeeded in forming a village on May 5, 1867 with a population of fifty voters – including nineteen women – under the leadership of Ramires Sr., known as "El jefe". With this auspicious beginning, Walnut Creek quickly became self-sufficient with few if any connections to other villages or towns throughout Contra Costa County save for occasional trade shows put on by El Jefe himself or by his deputies (or sometimes others such as José Herrera). In 1870s walnuts became available for market export from coastal CA but required processing because of hulling/peeling which destroyed many nutrients released during growth; walnuts destined for Europe were processed further using mechanical equipment then exported unharmed without Hulling/Peeling. To meet increasing demand for their production walnuts were trucked downriver from Antioch until 1915 when railroads arrived; thereafter all deliveries were made ashore via steamship either directly to Emeryville or Oakland where they were unloaded onto barges which took them upriver until arriving at Wharf No 8 opposite today's City Hall on Alameda Street just south of Interstate 580 next to Treasure Island Casino & Resort
