One story has it that Caiaphas feared someone would steal his wine while he worked on site so he gave each labourer two bottles of wine daily instead (). Alternatively another story has it that because walnuts are an important crop to Northern Italy (), Emperor Nero decided that everyone who owned farmland around Orinda should get a share () On December 10th 1917 local residents ratified an ordinance establishing fire protection districts 1-3 including parts of Contra Costa County which included Walnut Creek Village) When World War II began on September 2nd 1939 local businesses closed their doors due to rationing ); however many reopened soon afterwards because war production ran parallel to commercial production During World War II various industries either stopped or were greatly delayed due to lack or materials; such as auto manufacturing which ceased operations early 1942 but resumed later that year thanks largely to wartime reworking efforts by Kaiser Wilhelm Motors (); also certain agricultural products were diverted for military use such as flour for aircraft manufacture (), arms production () and gasoline for tanks ()) although war profits helped support postwar reconstruction efforts
The Walnut Creek area was first settled in 1847 by John Wesley Powell. In 1850, the first post office was established at Walnut Creek. By 1860, the population of Walnut Creek had increased to 150 people. The town of Walnut Creek began to be developed in the early 1870s, and by 1881, it had a population of 1,500 people. The town became an incorporated municipality in 1886. In 1927, Walnut Creek merged with neighboring Pleasanton to form the city of Pleasanton.
