They wanted to provide a place where people could come and shoot targets with accuracy and consistency. Today, Vista has over 1,000 shooters that use the range each week. The Vista Shooting Range is open from 7 am to 9 pm everyday except statutory holidays.

It would be the largest and most important military post in California. The fort was not built butVallejo's successor as governor, John C. Frémont, did establish an arsenal at Point Lobos in 1876 to supply San Francisco with arms and ammunition from across the country. Californians were proud of their statehood and history; they displayed this pride by erecting numerous public buildings including two state capitol buildings (1875–77) and a dozen county courthouse buildings (1881–88). In 1906, during World War I, many Californians volunteered for service in various organizations such as the American Expeditionary Forces or World War I Veterans' Committee. Some became well-known figures such as Edward Munch or Alice Paul; others like Gus Grinstead or Jack London never achieved fame but left behind some lasting memories. The Great Depression led to social turmoil throughout California which manifested itself through increased crime rates and poverty among working class Californians. This prompted Governor Franklin D Roosevelt to issue Executive Order 10952 causing widespread unemployment throughout California beginning on October 15th 1933 until February 5th 1934; this order effectively ended all organized labor within California government jobs effective January 1st 1934 statewide except those still held by union officials who had already been fired without cause upon that date. Additionally, many small businesses closed up shop due to lack of customers or competition from larger companies which had recently returned from national campaigns financed by FDR himself
In 1847, the first post office in Vista was established. It was called "Vista Post Office." In 1854, the name of the town was changed to " Vista," after it became a county seat. The first courthouse in Vista was built in 1857. The present courthouse is located on Fifth Street.
