In 1925, two men named Edwin Lyle and Harry Auerbach built a house on land they had acquired east of present-day Vista Boulevard just south of Redlands Boulevard. The house became known as "The Old House." In 1929, when it became apparent that new housing developments were being planned for this area (the last time this area was rural), developer Rufus Howe bought some land adjacent to The Old House from Edwin Lyle and Harry Auerbach for $1 million dollars - making him one of history's earliest developers in Southern California. Howe development soon included other subdivisions including Northridge (later renamed North Hollywood) and Echo Valley with its own streetsamenhoods administered by City Hall instead of directly by homeowners or city fathers like those found later within City Limits neighborhoods like Westwood Village or Beverly Hills
