Vista is a city in Inyo County, California. As of the 2010 census, its population was 14,651. The city is located on the eastern edge of Owens Valley, at an elevation of 5,610 feet (1,817 m). It was founded in 1887 by American Indian man George Custer and his wife Ada Custer as Horseback Springs Station. The town site was resting on high grounds above the rushing stream that now forms downtown Vista. A wagon road led from east to west along what is now First Street; it crossed a small meadow on which two stocky structures still stand: the old courthouse and jail. These were both built by early settlers for use as outposts during their drive across the Great Basin overland route from Sacramento to Las Vegas. In 1887, grazed land north of horseback springs became available when John Sutter discovered gold near today's Mount Shasta. On July 24, 1887 – just weeks after first crossing the country – citizens of nearby Oroville voted to incorporate as a city under the name Horseback Springs Station with a population of twenty-one residents (including six Indians). At this time there were no public buildings or services within Vista proper other than storerooms used by local ranchers who transported goods into and out of town; but within a few years new businesses were coming up: harnessesmith shop operated by Wm Ransom & Co., saddlers Fenton & Sons and Jno Haggerty’s grocery store (the first open in San Bernardino County), post office (1889), hotel “The Castle” managed by Captn John Blythe (1892), among others. 3% increase in 2002

Vista is a city in Northern California, United States. The population was 103,731 at the 2010 census. It lies on the north bank of the San Joaquin River, about 20 miles (30 km) east of Sacramento and 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Fresno. The city's name is derived from Spanish for "valley". The first Europeans to visit what is now Vista were praying for help when they saw an empty valley on horseback. Captain John Brougham named the land Rancho de las Pulgas because he thought there might be wild pulgas living thereabouts. He also founded Mission San Antonio de Padre in 1827 and named one part of the town after him: Altoona Avenue. A post office called Vista was established in 1868, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first store opened in that year along Third Street east of Center Street; it became known as "The Valley Store" and still stands today near Masonic Boulevard and University Avenue. In 1890, construction began on a new County Courthouse—the only building built in Vista—and finished nine years later. That courthouse served as county seat until 1911 when Fresno took over that role from Vista. In 1926, Robert Jarrell developed land north of present-day downtown Vista on which he built his home palace at 6200 State Route 99A (now Vaughn Road). After purchasing 5,000 acres (20 km2), including much of what is now downtown Vista and parts of western Riverside County, Jarrell offered it to the government for development into an open-air shopping center called City Park—later renamed Renaissance Plaza II due to its then high cost tag ($225 million). However, no development occurred because money availability was limited during World War II by government austerity measures related to military mobilization
The city of Vista, California was founded in 1853 by Manuel Nieto and his wife María Juana de la Cruz. It was named after José Joaquín Victoria, the governor of Baja California who helped found the Mexican state of Coahuila. The city's first post office was opened in 1854. In 1868, Francisco Pico moved to Vista from San Diego and started a grocery store there. This led to the growth of Vista as a small town with a population of around 100 people in 1870.
