In 1902, some citizens of Visalia organized to form their own school district known as "Los Angeles Union". This effort failed but helped begin to create a sense of community within the small town which had been nearly deserted since Mexicans left for Mexicoland during the 1800s. On December 12, 1907, construction began on what would become one of America's first large concrete structures - the Madera County Courthouse Square (now home to both Visalia City Hall and county courthouse). At that time, only about 200 people lived in Visalia; today its population exceeds 10,000! A more significant event happened on October 15th 1952 when Perez Mateos opened his successful restaurant at 201 E Main Street called La Casa de Pueblo (the House of God). This landmark served as an early prototype for much later Mexican American restaurants throughout North America (e.g., Chipotle!). In 1957-58 additional businesses were added to this block including Eddy's Department Store which remains open today as one of downtown's most popular venues for events and shopping
