Before the arrival of Europeans in California, the area that is now Visalia was inhabited by the Kumeyaay people. The first Europeans to visit this area were Spanish missionaries, who arrived in 1769. The Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was built on the site of what is now downtown Visalia in 1776. The mission became a secular church and Heard Museum in 1836. In 1851, an act from Congress allowed for the purchase of Rancho Tejon by James Hite. This land had been purchased from Mexican landowners as part of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1857, George Custer and his troops were stationed at Camp Pendleton on Rancho Tejon. They left behind a supply depot and several hundred horses, which soon proved too much for local farmers to handle. A group of men under Captain John Sutter came up with a plan to create a wagon road from Sacramento through Tejon to San Francisco Bay. They named their new venture “The American Road” after President James Kapp’s failed attempt to build an overland route between Stockton and San Diego via Sonoma County (the Mexican National Road). On September 12, 1858, they started construction on what would become known as the American Road System; today it is State Route 101
