Visalia, California is a small city located in central California. The population was 931 at the 2010 census, down from 1,052 at the 2000 census. It is part of Fresno County and has a land area of just over square miles (178 km2). The city proper contains only about one-third of its total acreage; most of it is scattered around rural areas to the north and east. The first Europeans to visit what is now Visalia were Juan Crespo and Gaspar de Portolà on August 31, 1769. They stopped at an oasis near today's intersection of US 101 and State Route 101B. From there they explored northeastern San Joaquin Valley and named it after Trinidad in the Spanish colony of Mexico City. In 1823, Alvarado granted Rancho Rinconada to Mexican residents Pedro Armijo and Vicente Guerrero for grazing sheep on their ranchos that straddled present day US 101 south of downtown Visalia. In 1827, Sacramento businessman John Sutter founded Sutter's Hardware here on 10 acres he had bought in 1825 from José Garza y Gascón for $1 million dollars ($10 million today). By 1850, Visalia had a population of 350 people with an agricultural economy based largely on raising hay, cattle, pigs, chickens and vegetables for local markets. However by 1860 there were only 60 people living in town limits while 119 people lived within 5 miles (8 km) of the urban center on municipal property. In1872 Isidore Wixom organized what became known as "The Oldtimers" who erected a log cabin called Winters' Cabin near where Interstate 5 now meets SR 99 west of town limits. This was also home to Don Carlos Escobar's bakery which operated until 1902 when it burned down due to poor management practices by owner Carlos Escobar Jr.. The city continued to grow during its golden years until World War II when it suffered damage from bombing raids. After the war, Visalia began to decline as a result of high crime rates and lack of jobs. However, since the late 1990s, there has been an effort to revitalize the city with new development and growth opportunities. Today, Visalia is a vibrant community with strong economic interests that continues to face challenges but remains committed to its namesake: "the land where bread goes down."
In 1851, the first post office in Visalia was established. In 1872, the city was named after General Antonio Vallejo, who served as a commander of Mexican troops in California during the American-Mexican War. The name "Vallejo" came from Spanish explorer and conqueror Diego de la Frontera, who called it San Francisco del Vallejo. In 1915, the city annexed part of the unincorporated community of Garza to its limits. On July 1, 1922, Visalia became an official city with a population of 507.
