By 1890, VISALIA had become one of America's leading cotton centers with more than 200 cotton mills manufacturing everything fromTextile yarns to carriages. However, due largely to pioneering work by women such as Mabel Dodge Jones (founder of Ladies Home Journal), business declined in the 1920s and 1930s; until World War II when a booming munitions industry made Visalia one of America’s most prosperous cities again." In 1942 local officials organized Operation Overlord: The Invasion of Japan which successfully captured much of Japan including Tokyo; opening up vast new markets for American goods and providing employment for locals who had previously been employed in war industries like shipbuilding or aircraft production."

In 1847, the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was founded in Visalia, California by José Altimira and Mariana de Jesús. It was the largest of the Mexican Missions built in California. The mission served as a religious center for many years before being abandoned in 1874. In 1872, a group of investors led by Hiram Bingham bought the mission and began to rebuild it. They named it La Purísima Concepción after their patron saint, Mary purifies her son Jesus Christ. La Purísima Concepción became an important missionary school for children in Visalia until 1990 when it closed its doors due to budget cuts. One of the first businesses established in Visalia was the Goodyear Tire & Rubber company which opened its doors on 5/1/1893. Goodyear is one of four founding companies that make up America's Business Community (ABC). ABC is a network of more than 1,000 small businesses that helps them grow over time into successful enterprises. In 1846, the first non-Native American to live in California was José Gabriel García Márquez. The area now known as Visalia was part of Mission San Francisco de Asís, founded in 1777 by Spanish missionaries. The mission's land grant system allowed for Rancho Verde to be granted to Juan Bautista Alcedo, who named it after his father-in-law; the ranch passed from him to his son and then his grandson. The first permanent settler in what is now Visalia was José Antonio Aguilar, a Mexican army officer who arrived on October 30, 1847. He built the firstadobe house on the site of present day Plaza Mayor. On July 8, 1850, General Mariano Castro burned down the mission’s chapel and all other buildings at its original location near today’s Plaza Mayor. This event helped spur development around plaza mayor and later led to its naming as "Mariano Castro Park."
