The first permanent American settlers arrived in 1847 and founded the town of Visalia on an agricultural plot about 7 miles (11 km) northeast of present-day Fresno. The name "Visalia" was chosen because it would have a good market for goods brought over by wagon trains from the east during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1851, the railroad came through and Visalia became an important seaport on the Central Valley Railroad. In 1862, when California became a state, Visalia's status as a county seat changed to that of its current location. The post office at Visalia was established on January 3, 1868, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 31, 1912. The first person to be listed as mayor of Visalia was Wm Henson on February 9th, 1888; he served three terms ending December 31st each year except 1895 which he served only one term due to illness. At various points during its history—from 1868 until 1912—visa l ia had more than 10 newspapers published under one roof; however these days there are only 2-3 newspapers published each week with most publications having less than 50 readership During World War II much activity took place at nearby Bakersfield Naval Air Station located about 15 miles (24 km) away including conducting air-to-air combat against Japan while also manufacturing aircraft parts for other nations such as America's Lockheed Aircraft Corporation and British Design Bureau Martin Marconi Ltd.. A large number of workers were stationed here during World War II including many Japanese residents who lost their homes or businesses in Pearl Harbor along with men from all over North America who helped build up our country after Pearl Harbor . As late as early 1951 local builders were still building houses out back despite new housing being built closer to town center

The area that became Visalia was part of the Alta California mission district and it was from here that Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded in 1769. The town started as a staging ground for the trip down the Central Valley and into Gold Country. In 1821, it became an incorporated municipality. By 1851, it had reached its present size with a population of 1,500 residents. It saw much growth during the early years of its incorporation because of the gold rush and later because of agricultural production.
