A mission was established here in 1827 by Father Miguel Costilla with initial intentions of converting Native Americans into Christianity but it soon became known as simply Mission Santa Anita because most of the settlers were Spanish Catholics from nearby Pico Rivera. In 1861, when California became a state, Victorville's incorporation as a town occurred without any vote or discussion from the community's citizens. In 1916 it again passed an ordinance becoming one of two cities (the other being Riverside) in San Bernardino County added for having populations over 10,000 people within five years after passage of state law No. 5657 legalizing municipalities with populations over 10,000 residents on July 1st 1916. During World War II Victorville played an important role as one of several major U .S . industrial towns supplying parts for enemy planes and tanks throughout North Africa and Europe; many factory workers who Technical Sergeant Edward Janssen brought back photos home with his M4 carbine developed Victory Gardens cigarettes used at Arroyo Seco Army Airfield (now John Wayne Airport). After V-E Day these factories closed down but thousands more jobs were created through government contracts such as those won by General Electric which built their new plant in 1917 just south of town near Geiger Park while Ford built their new plant north outside town across from Pershing Field airport which produced military vehicles during World War II including Mustangs starting production in 1941. By 1880, they had constructed two more homes and started to sell goods and services to local farmers and ranchers. In 1886 the Victorvilles donated land to build what is now City Hall Square. In 1912 George Victor died at age 80 after many years of farming in California's Central Valley. Anna Victor continued to farm until her death in 1951 at 86 years old. At 88 she became one of the oldest women ever to die in California when she passed away at her home in Citrus Heights. Her husband preceded her in death that year with 87 years old.. There are currently no living descendants of eitherGeorge or AnnaVictorville but there are numerous museum interpretations honoring them both alive or dead across the United States including one located in downtown Los Angeles
