Victorville is a city in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 8,883 at the 2010 census. Victorville was founded in 1887 by James P. Warner and others as a military post on the San Bernardino River. It became a town in 1912 and an incorporated city in 1932. The city has been named for General José María Cárdenas y Gómez de la Hoz (1822-1893), who served as Governor of Mexico from 1876 to 1878 and president of that country from 1880 to 1891. The first European settler in what is now Victorville was José Francisco Abadie, who arrived on horseback on November 14, 1860, from Cerritos (now part of Los Angeles). He built the first cabin at the current site of downtown Victorville about three miles upstream from the river bank. His home still stands and is known as "Abadie's Fort." Other early settlers included John Doheny (1861-1937), Capt. George Greenwood (1862-1920), David Cooksey (died 1861), Chauncey Gardiner (came to California with his father Carlos Gardiner in 1865) and Wm Henson (died 1909). In 1887, James P. Warner established himself as a contractor near where he would eventually build his largest Rancho Adobe: 1,500 acres along the riverbank south of today's downtown area. This rancho had two main parts: one lay east of today's eastern limits of town; while the other extended westward all the way to Fillmore Street just north of Interstate 10/US Route 395 bridge across San Bernardino Creek which then ran east-west through town until it empties into Moraga Valley some miles northeast beyond present day Most people living within this original swath now live on either side or within one mile or less of where they were born - including many descendants of those early pioneers! At its peak during World War II there were more than 20 businesses located within what is now downtown Victorville! Today only four buildings remain standing... Three are historical landmarks: The old City Hall which housed not only City government but also Police Department Headquarters for most years following incorporation; Telephone Company Building which housed both phone service facilities for residents and business customers; First National Bank Building which currently houses local art galleries inside its walls - anchor tenant One Hundred Associates LLC moved out after 25 years when it amalgamated with Wells Fargo & Co.; Finally, Hotel del Coronado - former proprietorship of Commodore Perry Hotel before that became known as Sheraton hotels across America! In 1912 Mayor Harry Clarkson moved what used to be City Hall into newly constructed City Hall Park behind City Hall building... All property herein vested thereby with said Mayor Clarkson forever... [The park] includes Boulevard Street running northeasterly fronting upon it bisected by Elm Avenue... Plaza Drive runs east-west abutting upon Boulevard Streetswidow approaches Elm Avenue thence southeastwardly crossing over brushy McGraw Road thence southwestwardly intersecting Highway 95 opposite US 101 Business loop just south entrance onto I-10 immediately south side exit onto IG Parkway [Now called Plaza Drive Park Westside Recreation Center]. After being annexed by Modesto in 1934 following their annexation dispute with Victorville over water rights issues surrounding San Pedro Creek valley between themBoth cities saw rapid growth during World War II when much new housing was erected such that Albert Einstein once remarked "It seems impossible that anything could grow here permanently except roses" However Growth halted abruptly postwar due to heavy military presence followed by declining birthrates resultingin sharp decline starting around 1960s although some recent redevelopment has resumed . Starting around 1990 however steady population growth resumed followed by new construction especially near plaza drive park westside recreation center makingVictorville again becoming one OF THE URBAN CITIES IN AMERICATO REMAIN SO WITHIN A DECADE OR TWO
