Victorville is a small city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 23,722 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area and is located about 87 miles (140 km) north of Fresno. Victorville was founded in 1887 by John Sutter and his brother Uriah Sutter on land that had been claimed by both men. In 1892, the brothers sold their interest in the town to George C. Dowling, who developed it into a sheep and cattle market center with a post office, hotel, agricultural school, beer brewery, and other businesses. The city's first store opened in 1893. Victorville became an incorporated municipality in 1912. The city has experienced numerous economic downturns over the years including two general strikes against its charter member City Council which were successful but short-lived due to strong opposition from within the community; however protests against this decision continued until 1997 when council repealed all ordinances related to labor organization or strikebreaking during that year's municipal election which were seen as illegitimate by many Victorvillians. Victorville is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 103,562 at the 2010 census. Victorville is located on the eastern edge of San Bernardino County and is bordered by Eastman to the south and east, Fontana to the north and west, and Banning to the northwest. The creek that runs through town provides its name; it originates from a nearby stream called “Creek Valley”. The first white people in what is now Victorville were Mormon missionaries who traveled through this area in 1847-48. In 1881, when California became a state, Victorville was part of unincorporated East San Bernardino County. It was platted as a town on November 4th of that year. At first it consisted of only one block—the original downtown core—and had no railroads or other attractions outside of its own community center and business districts. In 1924 incorporation granted voting rights to women in the town limits election district; this gave rise to Victorville's current form as an open-ended city with no limits on population growth or development within its boundaries. On July 15th, 1954 City Council enacted Resolution No 2 which stated "that all citizens have an equal right to vote regardless of sex". This resolution helped turn around an initial lack of voter turnout in elections for local government officials which had been cited as one reason behind declining municipal property values over time. The number of residents living in Victorville increased rapidly during World War II due to military housing programs initiated by then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger; these included sending veterans home with homesickness cures and free food parcels while their families awaited their return home from overseas theaters Of particular note are Veterans Park (opened October 6th 1945), Homecoming Parade (November 9th 1948), Christmas Tree ( December 25th 1951) and Open House Day (January 3rd 1952). When liberation finally arrived following World War II there were few returning veterans left in need of housing so instead new housing developments were created such as Sunrise Manor (1944), Glen Helen Court Apartments (1945), Golden Nugget Village(1946) and Rancho Bernardo Heights(1948). In 1957 Mayor John Daugherty began efforts towards creating municipally owned public transportation within the city limits which would eventually lead to Market Street Railway being established serving most inner-city neighborhoods including those near Downtown Victorville until it was discontinued in 1977 when Amtrak took control operation along Broadway Street between Ivar Pohl Boulevard/Alameda Street junction and Interstate 10 freeway interchange
In 1853, the town of Victorville was founded by José Joaquin Cabeza de Vaca and his wife María Teodora Sánchez. It became a part of California in 1850. In 1854, the state legislature passed an act that named the town in honor of General José Joaquín Buenaventura (1813-1868), who had helped to drive Mexico out of California during the Mexican–American War. The town's first post office opened in 1855. In 1861, after the American Civil War ended, Victorville became part of Nevada Territory. In 1865, it changed its name to Victorville County and on July 1, 1870 it became a full county within California. On October 24, 1923 it was renamed again to Victorville because of World War II veterans returning home from overseas service.
