Victorville is a city in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 24,828 at the 2010 census. It is located about an hour east of Sierra Vista and two hours west of Reno. Victorville was founded in 1887 by Latter-day Saint pioneers who called it "The Promised Land." The city's name comes from the Spanish phrase "Viva Victorville," which meant "life and happiness." Founded on November 7, 1887 as part of what would become Inyo County, Victorville grew rapidly due to its location close to the newly discovered Gold Rush towns of speculators and miners. On December 12th, 1887 the town received its first post office when John Hargrave opened a small store in the upper part of town. By 1889 there were three businesses open in town: a stagecoach stop (the forerunner of today’s Post Office), a hotel, and J.W. Forster & Sons mercantile store. In 1890 General James Fenton moved his winter quarters from near Reno to tool up for a new gold rush campaign that began January 1st but ended on February 14th because there was no gold found at all in this area! A group led by William Tatum formed the “First Citizens” Committee to promote settlement around what is now downtown Victorville with the goal of creating enough business activity so that people could buy food and build homes during those harsh winter months while they searched for gold. This committee did much to get people interested in coming to this fledgling community; among their efforts were sponsoring dances and raising money for building supplies needed for growth. On April 6th 1893 residents numbered just eight but within six months had grown to 226 with over 20 businesses open including two banks and four grocery stores! As more settlers came into town they set about developing infrastructure such as water systems, schools (including one operated by LDS missionaries) and churches as well as beginning road construction necessary for goods movement between mining areas across these forsaken hillsides filled with mineral wealth! All things considered it must have been quite an exciting time being living in what many believed was The Promised Land – or so we thought! Unfortunately life here wasn't always easy though some events stand out particularly during difficult times like World War I when nearly everyone left for military service or during Prohibition when most citizens Bandied about getting rich quick schemes only leading to disappointment since few ever realized their dreams….. until today when we can say without hesitation that Victorville has enjoyed incredible success both economically and socially!!
