Victorville is a city located in Inyo County, California. It was named after General John C. Fremont and his wife, Maria Costilla. The population was 13,483 at the 2010 census. Victorville is located on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert and is about 120 miles east of Las Vegas. The first European to visit what is now Victorville was Captain George Vancouver on July 7, 1776. He sighted an area that would become Victor Valley from descriptions given by Mexican traders and military officers who had followed him across the continent during his explorations. On January 8, 1847, gold was discovered in the El Dorado Hills by prospectors led by James Wolkentinck and John Sutter at Gold Rush Hill shortly west of present-day Victorville. At first there were only a few scattered miners until quickly word spread throughout California about this rich new land grants being offered for sale in today’s Inyo County as well as Nevada Territory including parts of what are now Carson City and Reno NV! On February 14th 1848 two companies consisting of 20 men each under Captains Kendrick and Burt left Gold Rush Hill with $5 per day to find gold fields north of San Bernardino mountains but did not return alive or with any supplies other than their personal equipment! A week later they abandoned all their gear except some nails which they used to build a small fortification around their little outpost which they called Fort Stockton (now known as Gambrel). They failed to find any gold but created quite a stir among those responsible for finding it when they Returned safe & sound 2 weeks later with over $100 worth of goods including cannons etc… This event forever changed our town name from “Fort Stockton” to “Victorville” because people know that if these brave pioneers ever found anything valuable near our doorstep we wanted credit for it! 2 years ago – Today! In 1915, a gasoline station and tank farm were built in Victorville. In 1922, the first movie theater was established in Victorville. The United States Military Base at Tan Son Nhut began operations in 1950 and included a airfield that served as the base for American bombers during World War II. The base closed in 1991 and all of its assets were transferred to Japan. A shopping center was constructed near the military base and became known as "Tan Son Nhut Village." In 2004, an amusement park called "Majestic Mountain" opened on land adjacent to Tan Son Nhut Air Force Base which included an amusement park, IMAX theater, golf course, swimming pool and other recreational amenities.
