Victorville is a small town in Kern County, California, located north of Bakersfield. The population was 3,912 at the 2010 census. Victorville is the home to the Victorville Open Air Museum and has been a center for agriculture since the early days of farming. The first Europeans to visit what is now Victorville were Jedediah Smith and his party on their way from Monterey Bay to explore Rancho San Luis Rey in 1821. They named it after General Arthur Calkins, who had served in Mexico City as military governor during the Mexican-American War. In 1868, United States Colonel James Fenton built a rancho on what is now east side of U.S. Route 66 near present day West Mifflin Road. In 1869, he sold part of his holdings to David Waddell and Benjamin Paley for $10 per acre ($2 million at current prices). The two men started a new era of farming with their help but also opened up many new opportunities for industry including logging and mining operations which would later become important in Victorville's growth. The post office was established at Victorville in 1870; it changed its name to West Mifflin in 1907 when it moved from East Mifflin Boulevard near US Route 66 to its present location on Telegraph Avenue northwest of downtown. At that time there were only about thirty residents living within one mile (1 km) of the post office which grew rapidly with annexation by other towns throughout Kern County until 1959 when all but two incorporated into the city of Bakersfield proper without having their own Post Office Department! A number of noteworthy events took place during this time: On July 1, 1901 President Theodore Roosevelt made an official tour through Kern County stopping at West Mifflin Road where he inspected railroads being built southward along I-5; he pronounced Victorville "the most beautiful little town I have ever seen." On December 5th 1903 Mrs Roosevelt delivered her famous speech "If We Can Only Get Our Hands On That Railroad Which Is Running Through This Country To Sacramento And Back Again" before 4500 people at Assembly Hall - she closed her speech with this words: "I believe that if we can get our hands on that railroad we can build roads and bridges and portages across any creek or river so long as we have energy enough". After years of effort by several citizens groups plus state government investment these efforts culminated with construction starting November 8th 1957 - over 50 years after Mr Roosevelt's visit! A plaque recognizing this anniversary was unveiled next door to Assembly Hall by then Mayor Tom Bradley on October 16th 2006! On September 24th 1912 American explorer John Wesley Powell set out from Reno via Camp Grant Highway (now US Route 395) searching for Los Angeles River gold fields but never reached the river dueTo bad weather conditions they returned home after five weeks without finding anything worth picking up

Victorville, California is a small town located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. It was founded by settlers in 1887 and became known as the “Gateway to the Mojave” because of its location at the mouth of the San Gabriel River. The towns growth was due to its proximity to mineral rights and agriculture, which continue to be its mainstay today. The first residents of Victorville were men from Northern California who had come down the Colorado River in search of water power. They built a stockade around their rancho on November 1, 1887 and named it after General Antonio Jose Córdoba de la Peña y Baca, governor of New Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The community grew quickly, with men coming from all over for work on irrigation projects and road construction. By 1893, there were over 100 people living in Victorville. The Post Office was established in 1892 and served the community until 1907 when it was moved to nearby Coachella Valley. In 1915, Victorville became an incorporated town with a population of 350 people. Its first mayor was Wm Treadwell Webb. In 1933, following passage of state law establishing autonomous cities within county boundaries, Victorville adopted a charter that gave it more autonomy than any other town within Coachella County (excepting La Quinta). In 1941, following World War II when much of Southern California came under military occupation by Japan and America's entry into World War II as part of Allied forces fighting against Japan,Victorville lost many shops and businesses due to wartime rationing (the post office continued serving evacuated citizens through 1945). However, many local residents did not capitulate or flee; they chose insteadto build new homes and businesses close to their old ones throughout what is now suburban Victorville proper. In 1984/85, after years of planning led by then Mayor Tom Fenton (son-in-lawof Mayor Webb),VictorVILLE opened its doors to visitors for what would become one Of The World's "Top 25 Tourist destinations". Since then it has increasingly been open 365 days per year – whether business is closed or not! Despite occasional weather concerns similar to those experienced recently along portions south coast including southern Oceanside County - recent reports suggest that adverse conditions are no longer affecting visitation levels so I am predicting record numbers this year!
Victorville was founded in 1887 by the Stephens brothers, who named it in honor of General George C. Marshall, the first United States Secretary of War. In 1908, the city became a racial and color-blind segregated community.
