The town quickly became a center for citrus production, and in 1839 it became the first city in California to have a public library. In 1861, Vallejo became an independent municipality and was renamed after José Antonio Monterey, a lieutenant general in Mexican Conquistador Francisco Martínez de Anza's forces who fought against Spanish rule in North America.
