This period saw some early examples such as actress Lina Lambeau being born in this area during this time frame - she would later star in several films set here including One HundredYearsOf Solitude opposite Clark Gable and farce Our Friends In Midsummer Night's Dream opposite Alfred Hitchcock). Until recently much industry took place within or near downtown Vallejo along with agriculture on smaller areas like Hollister Road towards Carquinez Strait although these days many factories have relocated out into suburbs such as Orinda or Pleasanton with little impact on localjobs or community life. When California became a United States of America in 1846, the land that now includes Vallejo was part of the Mexican province of Alta California. The area was first claimed by Captain Juan Rodríguez de Mendoza on November 17, 1776, and given to him as part of the treaty resulting from his victory over Mexico at San Francisco during the Spanish-American War. The town was founded on January 24, 1847 by José Joaquín Moraga and Mariano Castro. It was named after General Manuel Vallejo—a veteran Ofiario del Reino Unido who had fought in both the Mexican-American War and the Crimean War—in honor of his support for American independence. In 1863, Vallejo became one of nine communities within Californias newly formed Central Valley region. In 1881 it annexed an adjacent unincorporated community, Mountain View, which had been located within its boundaries since 1869. During World War II, Vallejo played a key role in creating and supplying ammunition for Navy ships based in Mare Island Naval Shipyard (later Naval BaseSan Diego). After the war ended, Vallejo experienced rapid growth as a result of its relationship with defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corporation. The population reached 100,000 by 1970; however it declined to 80,000 by 2000.
