Naval personnel stationed there played a significant role in helping American forces win World War II against Japan. Afterward, many of those same sailors transferred to various military bases around the country as part of Operation Overlord - which saw Allied troops invade Europe from Normandy through France and Belgium into Germany. Vallejo also played host to several high-profile events during this time: In 1958, then Vice President Richard Nixon delivered his first State Of The Union address from aboardthe USS Constitution; two years later (April 6th), Mayor Art Agnos led a boycott campaign against Pacific Gas & Electric Company after they refused to turn off power to City Hall during an urban riots; on October 15th 1969 U2 performed live at Civic Auditorium while still under contract with EMI Records; four years later (May 12th),Valley College students protesting tuition hikes walked out onto Golden Gate Bridge in what is now known as "The Great walk". After decades of growth and progressivism within the local community – culminating with Measure B being passed by voters in 1996 –Valley College went bankrupt following a $30 million investment study that found little hope for economic revival based on current trends within society or within local businesses themselves. However, despite these struggles Valley College has maintained its status as one of Northern California's most respected educational institutions - hosting such prestigious programs as medical school graduate program; law school; engineering school;[and] business college.[1]
The first Europeans to come to Vallejo were the Spanish in 1769. The area was part of Alta California under the Spanish Empire until 1821 when it became part of United States of America. In 1846, the Mexican War started and Vallejo was taken by Mexico. The US took over in 1848 and Vallejo became a part of the new Mexico City government. The city's first mayor was José Joaquín de Herrera y Costilla. In 1863, during the American Civil War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna invaded California and captured San Francisco. Santa Anna sent troops into Vallejo to quell resistance and loot supplies from citizens. A military garrison was set up here until 1865 when the city surrendered unconditionally to US forces. In 1865, aVALLEJO HOTEL & CAFE opened on Market Street as one of many early businesses in this newly acquired city. In 1870, an arms factory was built here by John D’Annunzio for munitions production for Spain’s war against French forces in North Africa Later that year, Arthur Ashe played his first competitive tennis match at Tomales Bay Park while playing for Mexico against Argentina In 1872, Los Angeles County was created from parts of Alta California In 1903, Asphalt replaced cobblestones as the main street pavement in Vallejo after being developed as a remedy for water scarcity caused by drought
