On July 1st 1850 Jose Maria Martinez married Quincey Copley and Caspar Venceshia became their second wife. From this union came twelve children: Francisco Xavier Martinez (1851-1928), Marcela Ethelberta Martinez y Valdez (1852-1937), Eduardo José Martinez (1856-1920), Mariano José Martinez y Vargas (1860-1924), Guadalupe Elizabeth Martinez y Vargas (1865-1945), Agustín Emilio Martinez y Vargas (1868-1965), Pedro Armando Martinez y Valdez(born 1870?), Alberto Gonzales Martinez(born 1872?) and Rosa Eugenia Perez(born 1876?). The first European settlement in what is now Vallejo began with Father Junipero Serra's construction of a mission in 1793 on Point Lobos Creek near present day weapon Hill Road. A few months later Father Serra built another mission - San Lorenzo - about three miles west of present day Vallejo on Mission Island. However, both missions were abandoned after only six weeks when winter arrived. Father Sanchez used some of the materials from Father Serra's missions to build his new mission which he named Nuestra Señora del Carmen del Presidio de Santa Fe located on what is now lower Mission Island close to where Spanish Bay empties into San Francisco Bay. As early as 1817 Mexican traders were trading along the waterfront in what is now downtown Vallemare trying to find a place to set up a permanent residence because they had heard that gold could be found nearby at Sabinarilla Creek northeast of Napa Valley. They finally decided upon Fort Point on August 29th, 1817 following their discovery of $10,000 worth of gold nuggets hidden among piles of rocks near Point Reyes Station in Marin County! In 1800 Mexico gained independence from Spain and established its own government under President Vicente Guerrero but ceded all control over California including Tulare County to United States control effective January 27th 1800 via Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo which also boundary modern day Ventura County northward while still allowing Mexican citizens residency therein until such time as they paid U.S taxes equivalent to $5 per capita !!! Consequently many Mexicans who had been living west of Los Angeles fled across the border into northern California during this time period making it easy for Americans seeking mineral wealth within our borders! Many businesses were established within minutes or days after America acquired California goods thru these treaties including Jardines & Co., steamboats Captain John Fords landing point Dorothea Dutton Ferry Landing Licenses Company& others . Also various military installations were constructed such asFort Point Naval Base just southwestofpresentdayVallejoand other important properties soon followed including Donnybrook House later known as Donnybrook Mansion !A number of small villages sprang up around these military installations with Names like CummingvilleBaldwinville Laguna Beach Solana Beach etc but ultimately most residents chose not to move away from their homes because they felt it would be difficult or impossible for them ever again becoming subjects unto another government !!!!
