In 1851, Vallejo was founded by Captain George A. Smith and his men on the banks of the Sacramento River. By 1865, Vallejo had become an important ammunition depot for the California goldfields. Ammunition production in Vallejo resumed in 1881 after a hiatus due to World War I. The industry revived during World War II when new munitions plants were built in nearby Livermore and Vacaville. In 1968, Vallejo became home to the first federally licensed ammunition manufacturing plant in California. Ammunition production continued until 1986 when all nationally licensed ammo plants were closed down by federal law due to over-production.

Vallejo is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, about east of downtown San Francisco. The first ammunition production in Vallejo took place in 1853 when Enos Morse and his brother-in-law, George Stephenson, founded the Western Gunnery Company. The company built an arsenal and began manufacturing firearms for export to Mexico and Central America. In 1865, the company merged with two other companies to become Winchester Repeating Arms Company. The new company manufactured rifles and pistols until it was sold to Remington Arms Corporation in 1903.

The first European settlement in what is now Vallejo was made on December 12th 1776 by José de Molina and his brother Antonio del Castillo y Ulloa who were looking for a place to build missions after their failed attempts to find a route from Mexico City to San Francisco. After finding little success they returned home on February 9th 1777 and started building the mission church which would become St. Mary's Cathedral today. In 1824 Juan Bautista Alvarado came overland from Mexico with his family and established himself along the coast about 7 miles east of present day Vallejo Cove on land that he had acquired from Mission Santa Clara de Asisiende (later known as Rancho Rinconada). He built an adobe ranch house which still stands today next to the oldMission Creek Road bridge acrossMission Creek canyon near where it joins Highway 101 north of town. A second adobe ranch house was also built nearpresent day Hastings Street and Spring Street within walking distance of Bautista's original Rancho Rinconada property line going easterly into Coyote Valley toward Stockton CA .Bautista's properties became part of Rancho Cuyamaca when it was added to Rancho Los Patos Mexican Land grant given to Juan Bautista Alvarado on November 3rd 1836 following his return from Mission Concepción de las Américas (Alaska) with Juana Maria Alvarado Lugones (née Pacheco) on board as passenger #611 during Stagecoach Trip number HOA-2 May 25-June 1st 1835 . The first post office in what is now Vallejo opened in 1852 under the name of Dos Riosito; later changed to Villa Rica due to objections from some residents who felt that their village had been named too soon after their own village inside Vallleville just outside Ofrecimiento Reservoir - present day Hayward CA A new courthouse was built downtown between 1860 and 1862 by John Sutter based on designs prepared by then Deputy Sheriff Jonathan Thornburgh In 1865 Colonel Robert Ewing bought parts of Rancho Rinconada including most of present day VALLEJO COVE from Bautista Alvarado for $12,000 Ewing renamed it cattle empire Ranchero El Centinela after himself giving additional lands surroundingEl Centinela range or open space lying parallel thereto including portions now within BARTOWN VALLEY east OF EL CENTINELA ROAD north OF CHURCH STREET south OF EL CENTINELA PARK .....the ranch finally became part of US State Lands system under control thereof through National Park Service management.. In 1886 ownership passed hands again between various parties until it fell into private hands again with further changes taking place beginning around 1912 associated with WWI veteran Jesse Livermore who used much of El Centinela range for grazing purposes ..... Over time much more than 600 acres have been alienated or gifted back resulting in over 100 square miles currently controlled/owned by US Forest Service thru CALIFORNIA LANDSCAPE AND WILDLIFE FESTIVAL COMMISSION .) In recent years there have been efforts spearheaded by Mayor Libby Schaaf former Supervisor Aaron Peskin Assemblymember David Chiu Councilmemberolnir Sherman allocating significant resources towards restoring/preserving many aspects both interior and exteriorhistoricvalleyvalley
