Vacaville is a small town in the Santa Clara County of California, located about 20 miles east of San Jose. The population was 5,572 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Silicon Valley metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1868 by Mormon pioneers who arrived on horseback from Utah. The name Vacaville comes from a Spanish word meaning "vale of vineyards." The pioneer farmers who founded Vacaville used grapes as their primary crop and made wine and brandy from their production. In 1887, Vacaville became one of 26 towns in California to become a city when it was combined with nearby Milpitas. As a city, Vacaville enjoyed many benefits such as free water and streetlights, which were provided by the city fathers. In 1984, Vacaville joined the Bay Area Rapid Transit system as part of its effort to unite the Peninsula's five municipalities into one more efficient transportation area. As Bay Area Rapid Transit grew more complex and services expanded beyond transportation basics such as bus routes and station areas, so too did Vacaville's infrastructure needs- including an express rail line that now serves downtown with stops at both the old Sacramento facility on First Street (now Save Mart Center) and new shopping centers near Highway 101 north of Interstate 580. After years of planning and fundraising (and some funding assistance from then- Governor Jerry Brown), construction began on September 1, 2006 and finished just shy of two years later on October 15th, 2007 - adding over 2 million square feet to Vacavilles skyline! The trains run every 10 minutes during peak hours except for long trips where they run every 30 minutes or sometimes less during offpeak hours; this results in about 3 minutes per ride lost each time you take the train to/from Downtown! This addition has created much excitement among commuters who use BART to get around not only our great cities but also neighboring Palo Alto which shares BART service into downtown; both have seen significant economic growth since opening up their borders to BART!
