The town of Vacaville was founded on November 24, 1879 by James H. Beaumont and his wife Lillie B. Beaumont. The first settlers were the Beaumonts and their children, who arrived in a wagon train from Illinois. The town was named for General Vallejo, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as Governor of California. Vacaville's growth was slow until the arrival of the railroad in 1892. With new homes being built all around town, Vacaville became one of the most populous towns in Northern California. By 1907, Vacaville had a population of over 100 people and a police department that included 12 officers. In 1916, Vacaville voted to become an incorporated city and it did so with a population of 149 people. In World War II, Vacaville played an important role in the war effort by providing materials for German troops during Operation Overlord. In 1945, after the war ended, Vacaville Mayor Jerald Peele proposed making the town into a city again but this idea was defeated by voters in a referendum. In 1949, Vacaville became home to its own high school when San Jose High School opened nearby.
