The history of this small town goes back to when it was located along the southern edge of San Francisco Bay. At that time, there were no other settlements east of the bay and people used to travel great distances just to get to this small outpost. In fact, one of the earliest residents in Vacaville was J.D. Salinger who settled here in 1908 after moving from New York City. Today, Vacaville is a thriving community with over 8,000 residents and a variety of businesses including banks, doctors, insurance companies, transportation providers and more. It has seen a number of changes over the years but its core values have never wavered: community involvement, education and kindness are always at the forefront of its mind.
On November 3, 1848, the California Gold Rush began with a group of men traveling overland from San Francisco. On December 12, 1848, Captain John C. Fremont discovered gold at Sutter's Mill in what is now Vacaville. The town was founded on February 15, 1849 by David Wills and his family as a station on the Central Pacific Railroad. In 1860, when the railroad was merged into the Union Pacific Railway, Vacaville became part of the new company's Western Division. The population reached 10,000 in 1880 and 45,000 by 1910. In 1915–16, Vacaville participated in World War I as an American military post along with other towns in the Western Division. After World War I ended, Vacaville experienced rapid growth as a result of its association with Allied forces during World War II and its role as an air Technical Base for the United StatesAAF Ninth Air Force during that war. The post-war growth slowed but did not stop until after Janesville's incorporation into Wisconsin in 1959. After that time there has been significant contraction and decline of population due to technological advancements and various other factors
