Vacaville was founded on Nov. 11, 1887, by George A. Vacaville and named in honor of his father, Vacaville County's first settler, George A. Vacaville Sr. The town became a ranching community after the death of its founder and first mayor, J.D. Payne Jr., in 1907. The original town site included only a few scattered homes and a single store. But the town's growth was supported by the growing industry associated with the nearby San Joaquin Valley - including agriculture, woolen manufacturing, and mining - as well as by new housing developments developed around it such as Northwood Gardens (1914), Southwood (1922), and University Heights (1941). By 1955 Vacaville had grown to over 1,000 residents and was home to three schools - Northwood Middle School (founded in 1912), Eastside High School (established in 1922), and Villa Park Elementary School (founded in 1951). In that year, the city annexed portions of unincorporated Willits County to become its second largest municipality by population after Sacramento City Limits exceeded 2 million people for the first time ever. The emergence of post-World War II California saw significant changes take place within the confines of Vacaville itself - most notably through an increase in international migration that led to an influx of Italian-Americans into the small city during World War II; subsequent waves of Japanese Americans came duringWWII; then there were waves of African Americans who moved throughout California following the American civil rights movement; while still others arrived following oil discoveries near Vacaville during the 1960s and 1970s. These various outsiders brought their own unique cultural influences which have been discernible both inside and outside VACAVILLE itself over time: from Italian-American restaurateurs who opened popular Italian restaurants such as Joe's Pizza Place or Rico's Pizza Hut early on; to Japanese-American grocery stores like Sushi Samba which became highly known for their sushi rolls & nigiri dishes before moving into more formalized restaurants like Daiwa or Nakazawa later on; to African American ministers who established Temple Mosque Ali Akbar across from Northwood Elementary during prayer services beginning in 1969; while also numerous other businesses ownership changes occurred throughout these years including notable moves away from agricultural production towards service industries such as woodworking or plumbing late into this era – all indicative of how rapidly lifestyle changes often affect small towns across America when large metropolitan areas begin experiencing rapid growth."
