The community grew rapidly during World War II as many local soldiers were drafted into the military and their families moved into the area. After 1945, Vacaville lost its commercial significance but has continued to grow through residential development and new businesses opened up throughout recent years. Today, Vacaville is home to several high schools including Sonoma Valley University and two Fortune 500 companies - Intel and Chevron Corporation - as well as a number of small businesses and restaurants

In 1853 John C Fremont settled here with his wife Yvonne Heald from Sacramento in search of a new home for their family following the Gold Rush of 1850-1851 which had brought great wealth to Northern California towns such as Sacramento and San Francisco Bay Area cities like San Francisco and Oakland. They named their new town after their old home - Vacaville - because there was no other available spot within a reasonable distance for them to build their wagon wheel farmstead consisting of about thirty acres (12 ha) situated on gentle rolling hills near the current site of downtown Vacaville today (). Fremont started an orchard that produced apples for local markets; later he developed vineyards which made him one of the wealthiest men in California; he also donated land to UC Berkeley so that it could be used as a campus; during World War II he furnished many materials needed by the U.S military including tanks, aircraft parts and artillery pieces found throughout North America while living at 4242 Golden Gate Avenue in Berkeley Heights (). In 1915 John C Fremont’s widow Yvonne Heald married her late husband’s brother-in-law Harry Chandler who had come overland from Nevada with two horses freighted with provisions for an extended journey across country (). After Harry Chandler died suddenly in 1916 () Yvonne Heald sold all her holdings except one small piece of land east of town that she continued use as her personal burial ground until 1978 when she sold it off also (). It was not until 1959 when UCLA student Jane Goodall took interest in Ecole Nationale de la Peinture et Des Sculptures (ENS), then known as "Ecole d'Art Moderne" () outside Paris where she met Randolph Bourke who became her mentor (), providing her with access to art resources unavailable before then at ENS which led eventually to Goodall's organization Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TWRI). By 1992 most everything inside Downtown Vacaville had been replaced by office buildings housing some 50 technology companies/research organizations totaling more than 20 million square feet (+/- 2 million sq ft) making Vacaville oneofthelargest industrial areas westof Silicon Valley comprising more than 350 businesses employing 110,000 people ± 5%. youthful entrepreneurs are filling up vacated storefronts along Main Street while older businesses are moving into newer locations within walking distance or out into surrounding neighborhoods such as Dunsmuir Hills (), Civic Center district (), Midtown district ())
The first Europeans to visit Vacaville were the Spanish in 1821. The town was founded on October 8, 1851 by Nathaniel Hawthorne and his wife Maria de la Vega as a result of the American Gold Rush. In 1863, Vacaville became part of the newly formed Kern County. In 1915, Vacaville was incorporated as a city. The following year, it annexed portions of Rowland Heights and West Hills. On November 1, 1951, the California Legislature passed Senate Bill 4 which established the City of Vacaville as an independent city separate from Kern County. On December 15, 1951 Mayor Harry Jaffe presented a resolution to annex portions of Rowland Heights and West Hills to form a new city. The annexation was approved and took effect on January 1, 1952. As part of its incorporation into the city, Vacaville created an ethics commission and adopted an ordinance setting forth its rules for elected officials including residency requirements and Ethics Guidelines for Officeholders
