John C Fremont first explored Rancho Atascosa de la Bolsa (now part of Imperial Valley) in 1846 when he was acting governor of Alta California under Mexican rule; upon his return journey he noted "...a great number of Indian men going about like so many ants", indicating that there must have been numerous Pomo villages scattered throughout present-day Kern and San Bernardino counties along with adjacent Mono Lake region prior to Spanish arrival: "I supposed then," he wrote home after reaching Rancho Atascosa de la Bolsa on July 27th about 25 miles due WNW Los Angeles “that our Mission Indians were living near[ing] Chino Hills [in] addition to some others near Mexico City; it would appear from these circumstances that our Mission Indians were not very numerous...We shall see more or less bad actors amongst them hereafter." An attack on Presidio Captain Manuel Nieto's troops loyal to Mexican Emperor Agustín de Iturbide occurred on October 12thán 1776 during a skirmish near present day Death Valley National Park while defending adobe Fort Tejon against Native American raiders: "One party consisting chiefly of young bucks brandishing bows & arrows charged right into a line formed by Captn Nieto’s brave soldiers…the instant they attacked us we made good our retreat behind some rockslips which lay just beyond…the whole engagement lasted scarcely five minutes...In this encounter Captn Nieto lost one man killed & three wounded….This action gives rise nearly 150 years later still to this day one knife call ‘Tequila’ being found buried among those killed" - source: Santa Anita Park website
The first permanent settlers on Vacaville, California were the Mormons who arrived in 1847. The town was founded by George Barlow and his wife Anna in 1851, after they failed to find a place to live near their LDS congregation in Salt Lake City. The town was named for General James K. Polk, the 40th president of the United States. In 1858, Vacaville became part of Yuba County and was incorporated as a city on December 15, 1860. At its peak, Vacaville had a population of about 50 people and consisted of just two blocks of main street. However, during the 1960s and 1970s, Vacaville experienced significant decline due to its proximity to Fresno and other major cities. In 1990, Vacaville lost its status as an official city and merged with Fresno.
