Upland has a rich agricultural history dating back to 1846 when it was one of six villages in what is now Fresno that formed the Kern County Agricultural District. The area now comprising Upland and parts of neighboring towns was first settled by Native Americans in the early 19th century as part of Rancho Nueva Alta cattle ranching operations run by Spanish American fur traders seeking to expand their reach into new territory west of Bakersfield. In 1868, United States General Antonio López de Santa Anna made an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow Mexican president Agustín Cobreza and overthrow Mexican rule over much of California; he retreated to Northern Mexico City before reaching Upland and setting up his headquarters there. A few months later, on October 10, 1868, Santa Anna's general Lopez took control over most or all of Kern County from interim Mexican president Manuel Micheltorena after an abortive uprising against Cobreza at Plumas Creek near Chowchilla. On November 1st Upland became the nucleus for what would become Tilden Township which extended from present-day Hearst Castle Road southward to include parts today known as Menlo Park and Palo Alto proper while portions extending northeastward past Redwood Shores were included in Union Beach Township established December 6th 1860 just north-west/northwestofpresent-dayAlviso). The post office opened on April 14th 1865 under name Oroville with offices at present day Madera Road and McClure Road serving residents within Tilden Township until it moved its permanent seat east across Center Street from Oroville on July 8th 1870 through December 31st 1870 after Madera Rd./McClure Rd.(now State Route 99) became too shallow for wagon trains traveling overland then continuing down Center Streets along Mud Creek between Oroville Junction(on McLure Rd./State Route 99E) & Bernal Heights (on Madera Rd./Fremont Way), thence northwest along Fremont Way/Hearst Castle Road NW until it reached present day Union Beach Blvd.(now SR 99W)(Alvso land reacquired June 15th 1915 following battle between US Marines unit led by Major Livingston Ewing during conflict around Promethean Oil Field20 miles SWOf Angeles city limits during First World War).
