The first people to live in what is now Upland were the Native Americans who lived near Yosemite National Park. In 1868, Charles Goodyear established a tannery on his property that still stands today. Upland became a post office in 1871 and soon began to attract settlers from all over California looking for land to homestead or farm. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson issued an executive order creating the Angeles National Forest in parts of Fresno and Tulare Counties west of Fresno City. This area included much of present-day Upland as well as most of what is now Angeles County and portions of Kern County. The forest service has continued to manage this area ever since. The first store opened in what is now Upland in 1920 by Wm Murchison Store #1 & Son Incorporated., which was founded by Wm Murchison Sr.. In 1951, Jens Jensen started selling ice cream from his truck outside the grocery store on North Main Street until he closed his business due to health problems that led him to give up eating ice cream entirely six years later. Today, there are several restaurants that serve food from local farms available throughout town as well as local craft beers available at various stores within walking distance (see below). On Saturday mornings during school year celebrate American Indian Heritage Day with activities such as arts and crafts, games and talks about traditional Native American life methods known as "homespun culture."
