Upland, California is a small town in the Simi Valley region of Northern California. It is located about 20 miles east of Los Angeles and about 30 miles south of Ventura County. The name "Upland" comes from two Mexican words: "algodón" meaning upland and "polo" meaning post or pole. Rancho San Vicente de la Vega was granted to Francisco Alvarado on November 15, 1850 by Governor Manuel Micheltorena. The grant included 6,000 acres (2 km²) of land including present-day Upland Township and parts of today's Porterville, Carpinteria, Redlands and Santa Paula rural counties). In 1855 USGS surveyor George Aspinall named the stream Isabella after his wife Isabella Sanchez who had accompanied him on an exploration trip to this area as part of her role as county recorder for Ventura County. In 1860 Henry Cranch patented 5 square miles (12 km²) around present-day Upland Township which he called Rancho San Vicente de las Villas; this was also the location where he built his home later known as Cranch House #1 which still stands today in downtown Upland on Main Street just north of I-5 across from Trader Joes grocery store. In 1863 Drury & Sons began selling apples out of their wagon near present day Highway 56 outside the limits then assigned to Rancho San Vicente de las Villas; they continued doing so until 1906 when they moved their business into a new building at Sixth Avenue and Ventura Boulevard just east of Interstate 5 near Staples Center stadium).
