Upland is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 27,752 at the 2010 census. Upland was founded in 1879 by John C. Fremont and is located on the San Joaquin River near Bakersfield. It became an incorporated city in 1912. The town of Bakersfield was founded in 1851 by Nicholas Bakers and named after his farmstead which still stands today on the east side of town just north of Interstate 5. In1881, John C Fremont's group of men set out from Bakersfield to explore the Owens Valley area and found what would become Upland while camping on July 4th at mile post 323/4 of the Kern River Trail system. In 1912, Upland became an incorporated City with a population of 14,000 people through annexation of neighboring towns including Hintonburg (founded 1907) and Thousand Palms (founded 1911). The name "Upland" comes from two early settlers - Hiram Middlesworth who donated land for a school and store and David Underwood who built one of the first homes thereabouts. Today, Upland's economy depends primarily upon agriculture but also includes manufacturing such as leather goods, tires and farming equipment; it has also been home to several major aerospace companies since World War II including McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Company., Northrop Grumman Corporation., Boeing Company., LockheedMartin Holdings Inc., Missile Systems Division (MIDS), ATK Corporation., Hughes Electronics Corporation., Alliant Techsystems plc..
On July 16, 1848, Upland became a part of California when the United States acquired it from Mexico. The town was named after a Rancho Upland grant in southern California. The first post office was established in Upland on November 15, 1851. On October 17, 1861, the name of the town was changed to Redding because of the towns growth and development within that year's Union Pacific Railroad construction project. Redding was platted in 1865 by Major General Winfield Scott Hancock as a wagon and stage stop on the Northern Pacific Railroad between Sacramento and San Francisco. The name "Upland" was chosen for its similarity to an earlier Spanish name for California, Ojalá (now Bakersfield). In 1868, Gold Rush prospectors found gold near what is now Redding and soon started mining there. By 1870 most of what is now Redding had been developed as an agricultural center with nearly 1,000 residents. In 1872 a school district Was organized in Redding which grew intoRedding Unified School District #1 before disbanding in 1972 due to budget cuts. The first post office closed at 12:01am on December 3rd 1888 due to lack of mail volume from businesses located east of I-5 highway including those in Redding itself!
