Upland is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Kern County and northeast of Bakersfield. Upland is bordered by Chico to the east, Porterville to the north and Midland to the northwest. The first European settlers in what is now Kern County were French missionaries who founded Mission San Gabriel Arcangela (founded 1827) and Mission Santa Catalina (founded 1846). In 1853, gold was discovered in Kern County. A rush began for land in what is now Upland and other areas of Kern County, and many families moved into the area over time. By 1870, most of what would become Upland had been developed. The post office was established at Upland on January 8, 1850. A school district was organized in 1899; it became part of the larger Bakersfield Unified School District in 1959. Many businesses were established around this time: Coldwell Banker Real Estate was one such business that thrived during this time period; it still exists today as a large financial institution based in Bakersfield In 1951, fire destroyed much of downtown Upland; as a result of this event millinery store owner Mrs Lillie Haggerty donated $5,000 towards rebuilding efforts which included erecting a new courthouse and town hall building on Main Street within two years In 1957 an airstrip (Kern-Ontario Airport) opened for use by commercial airlines when Pima Air Lines served as its primary airline; since then there have been several other airlines serving UPLAND with Littleton Road providing access from both ends In 1969 local businessman Jack Kemp won election as Governor of California; he had previously served as Mayor of Los Angeles In 1984 local businessman Pat Brown won election as Governor of California Upland has experienced some growth throughout its history including becoming home to numerous high-tech companies such as Googleplex and Applebees although some have left for greener pastures elsewhere In 2008 park ranger team reported seeing evidence that sea level changes may be responsible for water seeping into streets adjacent to their property
The Upland, California area was first settled by the Ohlone people in the late 1800s. The first permanent European settlement in the area was founded by Captain John Sutcliffe of Spanish Armada on October 2, 1769. The town of Petaluma was founded in 1839 and became a city in 1851.
