In 1821, the Mexican land grant of Rancho San Joaquin was given to Augustus Lummis. This grant included what is now Upland. The first post office for this area was established at Rancho San Joaquin on October 25, 1827. In 1852, a group of Mexicans from Bakersfield founded the Central Pacific Railroad near present day Eastridge Drive and Highway 237 in east Upland. They named their railroad company "Los Angeles Californios". The name stuck and eventually became part of the town's name. In 1892, Chasen Goodrich leased 640 acres north of what is now downtown Upland from James Wirtz for $1 per acre ($40 per sq mi). Goodrich began growing grapes that would become one of the most important crops in California during this time period. He also built a small mill on his property which still stands today and provides water to downtown Upland today.

In 1905, General Delivery Service (GDS) arrived in town, making it one of the few communities along Interstate 5 where GDS served as a mainstay for mail deliveries statewide instead of being delivered by wagon or stagecoach
